I’ve always had a soft spot for animals. I’m very touched when I see an animal on the street. I feel animals and children are part of our responsibility as human beings, because they can’t fend for themselves. I like to take care of strays so as to not encourage breeding and pet stores to just create more animals. The same with babies. There are so many unwanted children on this earth, but it’s our job because they can’t.
I grew up on a farm in South Africa, so I’ve always been surrounded by animals. I was raised by a mother who always had great compassion and respect toward animals. It was instilled in me. I grew up that way. So when I see dogs or other animals suffer, it’s just been something close to my heart. Thankfully, I’ve been able to bring that concern to people like [those at] PETA who actually have a voice out there.
Charlize is well known for her love of animals. She has many times stated that she refuses to wear real fur, she has helped out with several causes through PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) and has attended several benefits and galas for environmental and animal-friendly causes. We at Charlize Theron Central are very proud of the work Charlize does and wanted to dedicate a page for some of the causes she has worked on. Please suft on to PETA for more information on these issues, and many more.
We know that Charlize has worked with many other projects besides the ones shown here and is currently involved in anti-rape, anti-violence and AIDS-help causes but we can’t seem to find any info on these projects. Know anything? Please email us!
Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Program
Academy Award-winning actress Charlize Theron, in partnership with the Entertainment Industry Foundation, launched the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project in 2005. The Project’s goal is to create a safer, healthier, and better life for impoverished children and their families in South Africa, especially those suffering from HIV/AIDS. Currently, the Project is working to provide vital seed funding to help create the first of a network of mobile health clinics that will serve some of the most vulnerable youth in one of the poorest and most rural areas in South Africa.

Charlize fights for pet store pups
When film star Charlize Theron heard about PETA’s investigation of puppy mills, she quickly agreed to help tell the pet shop puppies story. The “Cider House Rules” star took time out from filming her upcoming movie “Sweet November” (in which she plays a dog walker!) to host a video containing footage from PETA’s investigation. Charlize then sent a copy of the video to mall managers across the country, along with a letter urging them to dump pet shops.
Charlize begs for endangered rhino’s life
Charlize Theron has teamed up with PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) in an attempt to save an endangered black rhino from being shot to death in a “canned” hunt on a ranch outside Johannesburg. Baixinha, whose name means “pretty one,” is being sold as a living target to a “big-game” hunter, who will shoot the tame rhino where she stands. The man who can stop the killing is David Laylin, president of Speedtech Instruments in Great Falls, Va. (USA), who decided to sell the chance to kill the rhino and mount her head on a wall after his attempts to breed her with an aging bull at her South African home failed. The film star has penned a heartfelt letter on PETA’s behalf to Laylin, urging him to reconsider selling Baixinha, who is tame and fond of humans, and has offered to meet him in South Africa and help release the animal to a sanctuary instead.
Korean Dog Petition
A Who’s Who of Hollywood hit-makers and Billboard chart-toppers, including Kid Rock, Charlize Theron, Christina Aguilera, Joe Pesci, Steve Buscemi, Janet Jackson, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Pamela Anderson, and Bill Maher have signed PETA’s petition urging the South Korean government to prohibit the beating, hanging, burning, and boiling alive of fully conscious dogs and cats.
Best Friends Animal Sanctuary
Best Friends is the nation’s largest sanctuary for abused and abandoned cats and dogs and other animals. They go there from all over the country and there are never fewer than 1,800 here on any given day. The mission of Best Friends is to help bring about a time when there are no more homeless pets, and when every cat or dog who’s ever born can be guaranteed a good home with a loving family. Read more about their amazing work on BestFriends.org.
Green Cross, Global Green and fuel efficient cars

Fight against serving Bluefin Tuna
There’s something fishy going on at one of London’s most swanky celeb restaurants: The stars are aligning to boycott until an endangered fish is removed from its sushi menu.
Elle Macpherson, Sienna Miller, Alicia Silverstone, Charlize Theron, Sting and Trudie Styler, Ted Danson, Woody Harrelson and Stephen Fry are among the 31 famous folks who have signed a petition vowing not to patronize Nobu London until it stops serving the near-extinct bluefin tuna.
According to the petition, the stars say they can no longer “dine with a clear conscience” at the establishment.
Charlize Theron may not have spoken at Saturday’s Meet in the Middle gay marriage rally, but she certainly didn’t go unnoticed.
The Academy Award winner was more than happy to pose for pics, chat and give out plenty of hugs as she listened to speeches with her mom and a small crew of friends.
Theron was an early supporter of the Fresno, Calif., rally, which was organized by the grassroots Courage Campaign.
She wasn’t the only boldfaced name in the crowd. Find out who else was there and what they said.
