Charlize covers the May 2018 issue of ELLE

There’s an element of warfare to Tully, Charlize Theron’s second outing with Young Adult director Jason Reitman and screenwriter Diablo Cody. In it, Theron plays Marlo, an overwhelmed and over-it pregnant mother of two. Her Waterloo: the birth of her third child. As she plunges into staggering depths of exhaustion, Marlo faces down opponents familiar to so many mothers: an ineffectual partner, moody daughter, and differently abled son (and a school system that fails him); scarce funds for child care; and a postpartum body—heavy, leaking, and unwieldy—that’s no longer her own. Relief comes in the form of the titular night nurse, Tully, gifted to Marlo by her wealthy brother, and perhaps too good to be true.

Theron, who adopted her two children—Jackson (Jacks), six, and August (Auggie), two—gained 35 pounds for the part. And not since her Oscar-winning turn as Aileen Wuornos in Monster has the 42-year-old been more unrecognizable. (It’s worth noting that while Wuornos was actually homicidal, there are times when Theron’s Marlo, dead-eyed and anguished, looks similarly unhinged.)

Bolstering the dark comedy is Cody’s clever, poignant dialogue, which is at once funny “ha-ha” and funny “hmmm.” And while, yes, Tully is a mom movie, albeit one of a very specific socioeconomic status, it’s also a rumination on aging and the erasure of one’s identity when faced with the relentless monotony and drudgery of not just mom life, but life in general. In a phone interview with her good friend Chelsea Handler, who has famously chosen “otherhood”—aka not having children—Theron unloads all that’s weighing her down. — Katie Connor

Charlize covers the August 2017 issue of W Magazine

Charlize covers the August 2017 issue of W Magazine

The search for the next James Bond is over—Charlize Theron is perfect for the role. Proof positive: In Atomic Blonde, in theaters July 28, Theron displays her suave spy talents as Lorraine Broughton, an undercover MI6 agent who is sent to Berlin in 1989, five days before the Wall falls. As Lorraine, Theron is an exhilarating mix of icy beauty, alluring mystery, in-your-face sexuality, and fierce, fearless fighting skills.

In one epic battle, she takes on a team of brutal bad guys on a staircase, pummeling and decking them one by one while looking stunning in thigh-high boots and a shaggy bob. It is a triumphant female-power moment that is rarely seen in cinema, and Theron owns it completely.

“I didn’t just want to play a girly spy who depends on her flirty ways,” Theron told me at the W photo shoot, which channeled the late-1980s, gritty punk-meets-glam mood of the film. “It would be so boring to just be ‘the girl’ and wait for the guys to come in when there’s a fight. Instead, I thought about Atomic Blonde the way I imagine men think about parts in action films. I was intrigued and challenged.”

Charlize and Michael Fassbender on W magazine

W - August issue with Michael Fassbender

W – August issue with Michael Fassbender

Charlize and co-star Michael Fassbender is on the cover of next month’s issue of W magazine. Looks like the magazine focuses on Michael in this cover since Charlize is barely recognizable. Also I like the painting-like look of the cover. Charlize is wearing a Christian Dior dress in the cover. Can’t wait to see the rest of the editorial from this issue.

Madison June 2012 interview

It’s sunset at the Bel Air Bay Club, a private beach enclave atop a Pacific Palisades bluff with stunning views of the ocean, and Charlize Theron is ready to wind down. As she sinks into an oversized leather club chair, the 36-year-old star, widely regarded as one of the world’s most beautiful women, takes in the view and can’t help but smile. “God, that’s incredible,” she says, looking out the large windows with uninterrupted views of Santa Monica and Malibu. “You gotta be happy when you look at that, right?”

Theron has every reason to be smiling right now. Her career is white-hot, with a key role in Ridley Scott’s hugely anticipated sci-fi epic Prometheus (out now) and the imminent release of big-budget fantasy Snow White and The Huntsman, in which she plays the evil queen. And in her private life, Theron recently adopted a baby boy named Jackson. It was a long-held dream come true; soon after the adoption, Theron recalled a letter she’d written when she was 8 years old: “My mother found [it],” she revealed. “It said, ‘Would you please take me to orphanage, so that I can go and adopt a baby?’ I always knew I would adopt – always.”
